The picture above demonstrates that knots occur in nature. The knots above arose inside solid blocks of wood, where they remained until I carved away the complements.

I am a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno. I am presently the Mathematics Graduate Director for the Mathematics M.S. and Ph.D. programs in the department.

I earned a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1992. My thesis was supervised by Rob Kirby and Tom Mrowka.

Before arriving at UNR in 1999, I was a Visiting Assistant Professor at UC Irvine 1992-1994, a Britton Postdoctoral Fellow at McMaster University 1994-1996, a Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institut für Mathematik, Bonn, Germany January-June 1995, and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Swarthmore College 1996-1999.
